Jeld-Wen Week 11/3/2009
This year's JELD-WEN Tradition, held at Crosswater Golf Club, brought the legends of our sport to Central Oregon for a third straight year. Among the competitors was Scott Simpson, who is the 1987 US Open champion and long-time student of our partner, Kip Puterbaugh. Scott came out to the Puterbaugh-Green Academy of Golf to do some film work, as well as conduct an informal Q & A clinic for those who were fortunate enough to attend. Scott put on a great presentation for everyone, swinging with apparent ease and lack of tension on every swing, which is something we work on a great deal with our students. We could all benefit from maintaining a smooth transition, which leads us into a powerful and consistent motion through the ball. It was a real pleasure to be on the range with Scott throughout the week and walk the course with him as played his practice round. His consistently calm temperament is an excellent standard for all golfers to follow in order to maximize their scoring potential.
I also had the opportunity to film swings and discuss golf with many of the players including Loren Roberts, Larry Mize, Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Jeff Sluman, and Peter Jacobson, among others. Each player's insight and perspective was invaluable, and watching them play and practice is always a great way to continue the study of the golf swing. We look forward to having the Tradition come back through next year, when we would like to have Scott and perhaps other Champions Tour players visit the Academy for the public to enjoy.
